History - Tennessee Youth Symphony

Our History

The Tennessee Youth Symphony (TYS) is an accomplished youth orchestra that began its journey in 1996 as the Williamson County Youth Orchestra. As the orchestra expanded and its reach extended beyond Williamson County to students from all over Middle Tennessee, the name was fittingly changed to the Tennessee Youth Symphony in 2016.

Membership in TYS is a privilege for young musicians, providing them with numerous opportunities to not only hone their musical skills but also to develop socially. The orchestra offers a wide range of opportunities such as participation in small ensembles, master classes, community service outreach, recording sessions, and touring. TYS also boasts an extraordinary relationship with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra and several area universities, allowing our musicians to work alongside symphony musicians, college professors, private instructors, and guest artists in sectional and master class settings.

Over the years, TYS musicians have had the opportunity to participate in many unique, innovative, and truly enriching musical experiences. These include performing a special tribute concert honoring Veterans of the Armed Forces at Nashville’s historic War Memorial Auditorium, traveling to New York City to participate in a Broadway Clinic, touring Carnegie Hall and experiencing Broadway shows, traveling to Chicago to take part in a Master Class at Northwestern University, and performing at Nashville’s renowned Schermerhorn Symphony Hall.

The orchestra has also participated in a recording session at Music Row’s famous RCA Studio A, which has a rich history and has been the home of many famous recording artists. The orchestra also shared a concert with the Emory Youth Symphony, which was an enriching and fun experience for both orchestras.

TYS is always looking forward to new opportunities and growth. As the organization moves forward, it is excited to continue providing young musicians with a unique and enriching musical experience. With a deep commitment to developing the skills and talents of its members, the Tennessee Youth Symphony is enthusiastic about building on its storied history and creating a bright and vibrant future for young musicians across Middle Tennessee.
