A Message From Our Musical Director

What a wonderful start to this semester! Our young people are doing amazing things each week, and we are growing musically and socially as an ensemble. This diverse group, representing 5 counties and 49 schools, gathers each Monday night with a common goal: to play music together and to continue their development as musicians.

As we work our way to our December 9th concert, our journey will be filled with many challenging musical tasks and deeply enriching educational moments. This program proves to be the most ambitious in my tenure with the orchestra. Thanks to the hard work of our TYS Board and a generous grant, our youth symphony musicians have already spent an evening in sectionals where they worked with highly specialized instructors, both from the Nashville Symphony and other professional musicians from the Nashville Community. What a powerful evening it was!

Next month, our youth symphony musicians will have the honor of spending an evening with violinist Ms. Zoya Leybin. Ms. Leybin will not only work with us on our performance of Shostakovich’s Festival Overture, but also describe for us the plight of the people and composers of that time. She will share with us her first-hand experiences of what it was like to grow up in the Soviet Union during the time of Shostakovich. In addition to the Shostakovich, our concert will include a performance of Morton Gould’s American Salute, Verdi’s Nabucco Overture and music of the season.

I look forward to the weeks ahead as we challenge one another to be our very best. This group of musicians is up for the task and I’m so excited to watch and hear their growth as we prepare to share our music with all of you.
